Cost of malaria in India
Seeking a causal link between health and development, a new paper compares literacy and primary school completion rates for those born before and after the nationwide malaria eradication program in the 1950s in India.
The authors estimate that the disease reduces income by nearly 10 percent.

This article has made a great effort in trying to show the impact diseases, like malaria, can have on human productivity in terms of missing work and school. It would be interesting, though, to see if there were any adverse health effects associated with the usage of DDT in India's malaria control program, as we now more about the toxicity of DDT as an insecticide.
