$100 laptop now almost $200
The One Laptop Per Child foundation will raise the price of its low-cost computer to $188.
The computer was designed for sale directly to participating (undisclosed) governments, who, in turn, agreed to distribute the product at no cost to elementary school children. The foundation will consider now releasing the notebook to a commercial market, hoping to encourage competition to lower their prices.
Update: "Give 1, Get 1" at $399.

I say that OLPC will sell XO laptops to Americans at a mark-up, the difference being a donation to further laptop distribution in the developing world: http://www.olpcnews.com/countries/usa/olpc_sales_plan_xo_laptops.html

If this is true then it is sad. An almost 100% increase in the cost is very high.
The OLPC project has competition - It is from Novatium in Chennai, India.
(but i believe that their 100$ computer is a desktop not a laptop)

hmmmm.... do i detect a bit of a snigger at the expense of nick negroponte? the concept remains flawed; people need a laptop after they can feel confident they will have access to basic health services, nutrition, and education. but the sentiment continues to be honest.
