Microfinance - buy it on eBay

EbayMicroplace – a new subsidiary of the world's largest virtual market place – will open for business this fall. A free-market-like web platform, the site will generate a supply of investors to meet the rapidly growing demand for capital in microfinance.

Should Kiva be nervous? With the long-term market for microfinance estimated at $300 billion, there should be enough business for everyone.

Excellent! Only at eBay can I buy a Holy Toast Bread Stamper (that's right--try searching for it!) and supply capital to my favorite microfinance provider. It's my one-stop shop!

Is it really necessary to generate a supply of investors?

I'm reminded of a recent blog posting by Google's Chris DiBona.

"Don't say you're going to do it.

Do it."

Kiva is the first mover in this space. I'm intrigued by the for profit slant on this initiative.
