G8 quiet on vaccine commitments

The New York Times reported last week that the G8 would be discussing advance market commitments for vaccines. The meeting in Rome has come and gone, but I haven't been able to find any evidence that they came up with anything. A shame, as an ounce of prevention may be worth much more than a pound of cure.

As I understand it, the objective of the September 7th meeting in Rome was simply to educate new potential donors outside of the G8 process, who were not already familiar with the AMC concept and pilot proposal. By that measure, it was a success - I have heard that there were around 15 country representatives in attendance, led by Italy, Canada and the UK and supported by GAVI and the World Bank. This was conceived with the aim of informing a more substantive meeting of finance ministers around the IMF-World Bank meetings in Singapore later this month. So the real action is yet to come...

In the meantime, you can see the pilot proposal online at http://www.cgdev.org/doc/ghprn/WB-GAVI_AMC_Pilot.pdf

Jessica - thanks for the correction! Hope that we'll hear some good news from Singapore.
